Subjunctives with Wish/If Only
Subjunctives are sentence constructions used to express
situations that contradict with the real situations.

1.Subjunctive
with wish
Wish can
be used with several different tenses: wish + past simple, wish + past perfect,
wish + would + infinitive.
a)
Wish +
past simple
This expresses an unrealistic desire for the present situations to be
different since there is very little chance of the change occurring
Examples: I wish lived in
Australia
I wish had wings
I wish I could
fly
I wish I had new
computer
I wish I was rich
I wish he could
went by car every day
b) Wish + past perfect
This expresses a desire that an action or event in the past had been
different
Examples: I wish I hadn’t decided
to work in that company
I wish I hadn’t to sell my car

wish he hadn’t finished the task before the deadline
I
wish I hadn’t give up to study
I
wish I hadn’t lose that pocket money
c) Wish + would + infinitive
This expresses a desire for a situation to chance either now or in the
future.
The change could possibly occur but it generally depends on actions
fromsome other persons or things
Examples: I wish he would give up
smoking
I wish he would give up hunter

wish he would never give up to study

2. 2. Subjunctives
with if only
If
only can be used instead of wish in all three constructions above. if only has a stronger and unrealistic
meaning than wish.
Examples: if only I had wings
